Plastering & Rendering

Rendering retaining wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.14 PM

We have just built a concrete block retaining wall. Approximately 1m high and 20m long (blocks laid flat). There are weep holes every meter and a waterproof membrane behind the rest of the wall. Coping stones on top of the wall. The ground behind is rock/sandstone. We want to render the wall and wanted to understand whether there are advantages of going for more expensive silicon/monocouche (krend, weber, etc) render systems over a more traditional painted sand and cement in this application. Importantly, will paying more for the different render systems reduce maintenance over the lifetime (repainting, cracking). I assume some maintenance will be inevitable when rendering a retaining wall. Thanks in advance

Hi I would say going for a sand and cement finish would be great and keep the price down if you haven't got to match the house long you have lime in top coat b fine stop it from cracking as K rend cost a lot more to do

A base coat with mesh embedded topped with a krend\silicon based top coat would be a more long lasting maintenance free better choice.

K rend and monocouche are much more better quality and longer lasting renders than sand and cement render . They are silicon base so no water can get through the render as sand and cement will . It maybe more expensive but a much better product and less maintenance as you can pick what colour you like and will not crack . K rend monocouche all the way

Sand and cement will work and the maintained is more if your wanted to paint it were as the monocoche is coloured to what colour you like and last for 30years .what you will need to do is inbed the mesh on first coat this will prevent it from cracking and looks much better and neater than your normal sand and cement hope this helps
