Should I tile straight onto walls
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.14 PM
I am updating the bathroom with a shower bath and wishing to know if I should tile straight onto walls or install a backer board onto the walls first then tile over to make more water proof? We are a family of 4 with the shower with average use (20mins mornings and 10 mins evenings).

The answer is yes, you can tile directly onto the wall without the use of backer boards. Although grout is not waterproof it is water resistant, you can buy grout suitable for power showers also. For piece of mind you could install a tanking kit consisting of a tape membrane that covers the joint in the plasterboard and a rubber paint solution that you paint directly onto the substrate. Hope this helps

Its always good to use hardi backer boards ,other than that green moisture resistant plasterboards with tanking slurry / waterproofer kit from just below bath too ceiling in shower area tape the joins and corners of the moisture resistant plasterboards tank and then tile when dry.

If walls are dry and solid there is no need for backer boards

Backer board is a good idea as it will add strength, but to make totally watertight you should install a tanking system onto the boards aswell, especially using tanking tape in the corners. Silicone all internal corners and along bath after tile installation.
