Colour matching existing whites gloss paint
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.33 PM
My bannister is painted in white gloss paint which has slightly yellowed. One of the newell post caps has some worn away paint and is patchy with some bare wood showing through. Is there any way to try and repaint this cap to tie in with existing paint without having to repaint the whole hallway? Using white gloss on its own would appear too white.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sadly not i'm afraid any attempt to just repair where ness will always show due to the yellowed gloss. if this was me i would just repair and re-paint the effected area.

Not really. The yellowing is in the oil paint and if you were able to colour match it now, over time the yellowing would continue and still look different.
My suggestion, assuming you don't want to re-paint the whole lot, is to be bold and paint the cap in a contrasting colour - grey perhaps, and do the same to any other post caps.
If you do decide to do the whole lot, use water based paints to avoid yellowng and toxic fumes in the house.

Hi my names Rob from R&L painting and decorating contractors to be truthful I would certainly not just paint over it with any type of gloss as you will have to sand it out and use a decent undercoat first then use a top coat me personally I would re do all of it again sanding
the affected areas properly and a gentle rub down with a p180 sand pad that you can buy from any decent decorating shop Dulux trade centres Brewer's decorating centres or even BandQ I would always advise using a decent make of paint that doesn't cost a lot of money in my opinion Dulux is ideal I hope this gives you some help good luck with your project all the best Rob

The areas are high traffic areas and are prone to being handled regularly as people tend to grab them
Water based paints just not strong enough good oil based gloss your best bet

Ideally the whole lot should really be re-painted. However It is certainly possible to get a perfect match to the slightly yellowed white paint.
This can easily be done using a colour swatch.
