Bathroom Fitting

Can a bathroom be re-tiled whilst remaining in use?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

I have only one bathroom in my house. Lower half of walls are tiled, except for shower which is fully tiled. Builder who fitted the bathroom a couple years ago did a very shoddy job on the tiles so I would like to have them all taken out - floor and walls - and done again properly, though with the walls fully tiled this time. Can this be done while I am still living in the house, given that I'll be needing to use the bathroom during the day? I'm assuming I'd be home all day every day, but I suppose I could go into the office during the week which would mean it could be unavailable during the day, though I'd need at least the toilet every night.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This happen all the time , you'll most likely need to remove your sanitary ware so the tiles can be laid properly but I often take a toilet out in the morning then tile the floor and behind the toilet wall then refix the toilet the same day .

Its all personal preference really although your builder should always make sure it suits you! It can be done by fully removing witch will result in a better job although they could go around existing iswell hope this helps

As previously mentioned by others, if you have good tradesmen on board they we always try to work around your needs, but doing it this way can sometimes take longer which may affect the price, although this should be discussed and noted prior to signing a contract so both parties are covered. A bath can normally be used within a couple of days, if absolutely necessary, but not so much with a shower. If you want a usable shower area, quickly, then I would recommend PVC shower wall panels, which are much much quicker to install than tiles. That way, the bath/shower area can be completed first, then carry on the rest of the room. We've never left a customer without a working toilet over night, I know of some "plumbers" that do this regularly. It's lazy and unethical, make sure you get someone reputable. Good luck.

A floor can be laid in a morning so a w.c. can be made available for the remainder of the day. A three or four hour window is usually manageable with clients. I once provided a chemical toilet to a client which was used in another room whilst work got underway. Bath/showers can be tiled and covered with polythene sheet whilst curing. It all adds time to the job so the client has to be made aware of that from the outset.
