Tiling onto wood then fixing onto marble fireplace?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM
I wish to cover my marble fireplace back. Iv bought some mother of Pearl Mosaic tiles to use. As the tiles are a bit fiddly I was thinking of tiling them onto a piece of thin wood then once grouted attaching the whole piece to the marble, which will also cover a gap at the bottom of the surround where our old fire used to fit. Can I tile onto wood? Is there any thin wood which would be best to use for this? My new electric fire is just for show I won’t be having actual heat coming out of it if that makes a difference. Many thanks

Thin ply would not be advisable and i would grout once it has been fixed to the fireplace dont do it before fixing as the grout will crack and movement will cause allsorts of problems, use primer on the wood and a good flexable adhevsive

Personally I would advise to use some cement board 6mm or hardie backer board but both will need their own adhesive and screwed to the wall the tile on top and grout afterwards.
I wouldn’t tile on wood as the moisture from the tile adesive will eventually rot the wood.

Hi. I would be careful using wood especially on a fire place we’re it gets hot as the wood will move with the heat and they will just pop off. Try and use cement fibre board. That’s your best bet.

I would clean the marble with a good base cleaner first. Then either prime the marble or apply a primgrip. You can get mosaic backers. They will make the application much easier. Ask about the mosaic backers at your local tile shop.
