Control outdoor lighting zones with mobile app

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi, I'm intending on having four separate outdoor lighting zones, which all can be operated individually. However, what I don't know is what equipment / hardware I need to be able to make that happen. There's a separate cable coming off the mains to hard wire the four zones, but I'm assuming the cables from the four zones will have to route into a single box which in turn will then need to be operated over wifi. I want to be able to control each of the four zones with my iPhone (i.e. an app), so that I can turn individual zones on / off etc. I've looked online but can't seem to find any guidance on what equipment is needed, therefore any advice on companies who provided these types of things or suggestions on what I need and how to set it up etc. would be greatly welcome. I have zero knowledge when it comes to things like this, so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil, it is good that you are endeavouring to upgrade your garden however any electrical work conducted should be conducted by a competent person with good knowledge of bs7671 and practical skills. The type of system you are after can be achieved with Quinetic lighting systems and the accessories can be bought from TLC, however a qualified electrician will be able to install this safely and also recommend the right additional products for your specific job.

Hi Phill, as a smart home integrator I can recommend you Lutron or Rako as they are the most reliable when it comes to smart lighting. I would not recommend going for a short cut especial when it comes to custom integration as you will spend more time and money to fix the system later on. To install this kind of system an electrician would know exactly what to do as they act as modules but a smart home integrator would be able to set up the system for you and even recommend improvements that would suit the application or your lifestyle. Let me know if there would be anything else I can help you with. If you want I can recommend some trustworthy and competent integrators in your area to quote for your system. Regards, Michael

It all depends on budget and how likely you are to want to add to this. If you just want iPhone compatibility with basic preset lighting scenes you’re best with something along the lines of Philips Hue. You will need the Apple Home Kit Bridge as well as a lighting control module/wireless switch for each of the four zones. https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us/works-with/apple-homekit If you are possibly going to want additional features in the future, something more sophisticated like Control4 would be best. https://www.control4.com/solutions/control4-app/
