Electrical

Length of cable to serve an induction hob

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

I'm a handy guy with a fair bit of experience of electrics over the last 40 years but I'm NOT an electrician. I abide by the rules and call in a fully qualified sparky to do the serious and legal stuff. We have a 7.3kw induction hob to wire now into a dedicated 32amp radial circuit installed and signed off last year by the said electrician. The hob replaces an old ceramic and the new hob cones with a 5 core cable (5 X 1.5mm - 2 positives + 2 negs and an earth) is only 0.8metre long. I'm ok with the connection aspect but is there a maximum allowed for that length of connecting cable? I'd want to use a 2m length simply to thread from the 45amp DP isolating switch around the back of cupboards avoiding taking off worktop and wall tiles. The isolating switch by the way, will actually only be 500mm from the hob but it's the route from one to the other which involves the 2m cable length. Thanks in anticipation.

You don't connect to the isolator switch! Thats the cowboy DIY method. Sorry. The terminals are meant for much thicker 6mm + cable. You need a cooker outlet point after the isolation switch, which you can connect too. You must know this though having installed a few cooker's in your time?
