Edwardian Wood - Restored. The Best practice

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.41 PM

Our Edwardian flat has original Doors, Frames, Skirting, Dado and picture rails through out. We would like to restore these to former glory and are wondering what is the best practice to do this. It is obvious that all the wood has been painted hundreds of times, so much so that it is losing form. (there may have been lead paint involved too at some point) There is a lot of wood to deal with 8 Doors spread over 1000 sq ft. What I 'think' the options are; 1.Remove all paint to the wood - using various tools then repaint. How long would this take approx? 2.Sand all the wood to a paintable standard then repaint. How long would this take approx? Cost? (Would it look good enough?) 3.Remove all wood from fixings and send away for paint stripping and neutralising. Is this troublesome and necessary? Thanks for any feedback

Hi there, your right about the paint it may have lead in it so burning off is not an option same as sanding unless you wear a good mask but how far to sand it all is up to you, doors and architrave you could dip but skirtings and dado rails would be a bit difficult. You could pay someone to do it all for you which could be 5 to £600 at a guess without seeing it. Most places ive worked in they normally end up ripping it all out and replacing with something close except the doors which would be dipped then oiled and polished, its a difficult one really but only you know what you want. cheers steve

Hi i do alot of wood restoration mainly in pre/victorian properties and earier. Right what you need to consider is the condition you want your timberwork ? and are you going to pay the relevent cost because i can assure you 1000sq of doors and architrave, dado, skirting etc will cost you more than 5/6oo quid to restore, if you wish for all timber to be put back into condition then, do it once and do it the very best as anything else will be false economony. I would suggest you get a proffessional in to do the job,any painter and decorator worth is salt can acheive great results with the right funding and materials. Personally i would not remove your doors to be stripped in some vat, care is the buy word in restoration.
