What is this in my shower plug hole????

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.53 PM

Just moved to a new (but old Edwardian) house. The shower tray was not draining properly- water sitting in it for ages.... I tried boiling water, 2 x drain unblocker liquids and finally ordered a plunger and a drain snake. I’ve use the plunger tonight and the plug hole came loose, so I could see inside.... there is some sort of white plastic cup like device screwed in ????? The water is still draining slow - can this be the cause ? What is it ? Or is it some essential part of the plumbing? Any advice gratefully received ! If you copy paste the link it should hopefully show you the photo 🤞🏻 https://share.icloud.com/photos/01Ffgf5I5eP_8e4aAhEvk8XYQ

Hey Kate, D&R Property is correct when they say it should come out, i would not expect it to screw out, it should just pull. The black rubber around it makes the seal and the water which sits inside should stop any smells coming back through to you. When you pull this out, it should allow you to get your drain snake inside the pipe which takes the water away. If this does not solve your problem, you should contact a local plumber who should have access to an acid solution like One Shot. This is industrial acid and is very dangerous, but it will sort the problem. Hope this helps, Steven.

Hi the plastic cup as you describe, is the intergal part of your trap, if you gently twist it it will lift out, that will give you access to put your spring in ,you will probly be able just to plunge it from there ,then reinstall it again gently twisting it in,i would not recommend acids,it very seldom works then a plumber comes along, to a blocked pipe full of acid hope this helps
