What do I need to do to lay underfloor heating on top of floor boards?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

I currently have varnished floorboards throughout my whole downstairs, however I want to lay tiles with underfloor heating. How should the underfloor heating be laid and what will need to be prepped to begin with? TIA

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello As a professional tiler with over 20 years experience i would highly recommend putting down a 6mm hardiebacker cement board screwed and glued then lay your UFH on top then depending on the tiler some would lay just on top or some would latex over i personally would latex over. Cement boards or insulation boards glued and screwed then fit underfloor heating and probe Then self level before tiling Best left to professional as poor preparation will mean the heating may will fail and the tiles will pop I’ve seen this happen before

I always use 6mm cement boards, such as Hardie Backer boards. Screwed down at 20cm intervals. Be sure to use screws which are long enough to hold firm, yet not too long as to penetrate any pipes or electrics which are laid across joists under the boards.
