Screwing Plasterboards/Drywall onto existing Masonry Wall
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.35 PM
Hi, I have been advised to screw plasterboards directly onto a masonry wall without dot and dab or a studded wall. This is as an alternative to scimming. Is it true that this will not work? Thanks Update: Thank you all for your responses. Against all advice, my brother went ahead and started to screw them in into the wall (he has stopped now). Should I expect any issues short/long term if they aren’t removed?

No it won't work. You will need to dot and dad or batten the wall first. And screw the board to the batten.

You can’t have plasterboard screwed directly on masonry without framing(metal or wood) other alternative is dot and dab.

Not as good as dot dabbing as long as the plasterboard is not foil backed dot dabbing is best and quicker

A partition wall is needed, or dot and dab, screwing plasterboard to masonary walls will not work

That’s an awful idea. Need to batton out the wall or dot and dab and even then it will still need skimming unless you’re going to tape and joint it. Owen.
