Seam in Hip Rafter with 2x2 used as support
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.35 PM
The hips rafters in my house are each made up of two beams joined together. Each beam makes up roughly half of the hip rafter length. They are cut at about a 30 degree angle (so they are fairly sharp cuts) and then pieced together. It doesn’t seem there is anything connecting them other than a jack rafter on either side and a 2x2 that’s screwed in at the bottom of their joint. 1. Is this something to be concerned about? 2. If so, What would be necessary to fix it?

Sounds like your hip rafter has been spliced, as hips are usually very long sometimes they have to be spliced. Some are butt jointed, so put together back to back and some are cut with a opposite angle. I personally would use something stronger than 2x2 but should be alright. Would only really be a concern if a gap appears within the joint.

It may well be that the hip rafter is spliced but the information provided suggests a 2x2 used to strengthen doesn't sound sufficient, normally there would be a splice piece either side of the hip rafter extending at least a metre either side of the joint and utilising through bolt connections at max 450mm centers. i would also suggest that a prop be fitted under the hip rafter taken down to a load bearing wall. normally there would be struts secured between the common rafters down onto the Ceiling joists this line of supports would continue to meet the line of the Hip rafter.
