What type of wood to buy to replace noisy step rise and tread?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.35 PM

I've got carpet fitting happening on my stairs in a week's time and wanted to sort out 2 of my steps beforehand, which are really squeaky and make a lot of noise when stepping on them. I can see that the treads have a crack in the middle and both, the tread and riser are what are making the noise (I tried removing the riser and the noise was significantly reduced). What's the type of wood I should buy to replace these with? I can't find specific tread or risers in the usual UK shops (Wickes, Homebase, B&Q). Can I use floorboards and cut hem to size and fit there? Pictures available on the below link: https://imgur.com/a/diNOSNZ?third_party=1#_=_

That looks like a very old pine stair prob mid to late 1800s. It appears there is no stringer but plastered down to the tread and risers from what I can see. I may be wrong. It doesn’t really matter too much as to the kind of wood you use to repair it if you are co wrong with a carpet. The issue is making sure it is properly fixed by glue and screws and dry before you use it. This is a job which needs proper attention to do correctly. It is also compounded by the fact it is a wheel tread on the stair which makes even more tricky. I’d get a proper joiner to fix it if you really want to. Otherwise put up with the fact it’s a very old property and creaks and groans as it ages.

From what I can see stringer appears to be covered with plaster-plasterboard. If access underneath is possible it's very straightforward. Reinforcing, re-glueing treads-risers is simple . Otherwise it is messy and costly job.
