Plastering & Rendering

Can you plaster over that ‘Make Good’ shite stuff ? Ceiling looks awful😩

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.35 PM

I’ve had a plasterer in to plaster over my artex ceiling using the usual Thistle stuff. After painting the ceiling didn’t look great - ripples and waves and marks from the blade of the tool can be seen. Asked him back to re-do, but due to the national plaster shortage he used this dreaded ‘Make Good’ Multi-skim stuff. The ceiling is still looking shite🙈 Wanted to know if this stuff can be plastered over without any problems ? (There was only 1 coat of this ‘Make Good’ stuff used over the ‘Thistle’ stuff.) Appreciate any advice. The ceiling is holding up the rest of the work that’s waiting to be done - floor laid, and kitchen fitted 😩😩

Remember every coat adds weight to the ceiling. Too many coats will eventually cause it to crack, so make sure you have solid joists and the original board is well fixed. You'll need a couple of bags of multi-finish.

For best results, prior to skimming; scrape the high spots away from the artex so the final coat of plaster can be applied as thin as possible but still cover the background. Each coat of plaster will ultimately add weight to the ceiling so it’s always best to take steps to reduce this in the first instance. Simply take a trowel or floor scraper and work across the whole ceiling until the pattern is lighter, this ensures weight kept to a minimum and should ensure a top quality finish with no ripples or background showing through. If scraping cannot be accomplished and the artex is heavily patterned. I would suggest over boarding the ceiling with new plaster boards screwed to the joists as this will reduce overall weight on ceiling and reduce chance of cracks etc. This would be my preferred method and how I would go about doing the job in my own house. Or another option is to first coat over the artex with thistle bonding to delete background pattern, then leave to dry, PVA and re-skim. N.B prior to this step ensure the ceiling is secure and not hanging or cracking in places as addition weight will be added with this process.

Yes, can be skimmed over but first use PVA Primer and then thistle bonding and just after skimming.
