Replacing existing halogens with LED MR16 bulbs - how many transformers do I need?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

So I've looked on here for the answer and can't quite figure it out from the posts so thought I'd ask: I have 6 Halogen downlights in my bathroom, none of them are dimmable. There is a fake ceiling and the light switch is outside the door. I tried to replace the bulbs with MR16 LEDs and the lights were flickering. Question is, can I replace them with LEDs, and do I need to replace the current transformer with an LED driver? Also do I need just one LED driver or do I need one for every light? I can see a transformer near one of the bulbs when I look up but can't need to check if there is more than one currently. Also, is there an alternative where I just do away with the transformer altogether and hard wire each light in? If so, is it as simple as replacing each unit or do I need to get an electrician in for that? From what I read on some other answers I might have to for regs

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

So with just replacing the LED lamps, you'd need a driver however depending on the load or wattage of the lamps, my could do with 2 lamps per driver maybe... that being said, replacing the fittings entirely for hardwired would be the better solution as that will give you a longer life on them. Obviously I'd say get an electrician in as it shouldn't take too long

Hi Neil You would need 1 led driver/ Transformer for each light fitting, the best solution would be to either replace the fittings to a modern fitting with GU10 lamp holders, or replace the MR16 Lamp holders to GU10 and disconnect the existing transformers, this would stop the issue of over heated transformers and there is less to have to maintain. Kind Regards

12v are for properties that dont have RCD protection in the bathroom. If you have RCD on the fuse board ditch those 12v lights and get some 240v integrated lights.

Hello there, Changing MR16 to LED type MR16 is not a good idea of modifying manufacturers original fitting but changing whole unit to LED GU10 is much better and over all cheaper on long term bases. Few key advantages : 1) Easy to managed ( GU10 you can change bulbs yourself) 2) Cheaper 80 to 90% savings compared to halogen I can write more to this about one page but the above is more simple and hopefully helpful too :) Thank you Vin @ OHM
