Why is my MEV making a loud noise?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

Hi, recently my MEV ( mechanical extract ventilation) unit has been making a very loud high pitch buzzing noise whenever someone switches on the light in either bathrooms on 1st or 2nd floor. The MEV always made a light whooshing noise in the background which was largely unnoticeable. After one year it is now making this loud buzzy noise that only goes away after switching the bathroom light off. The model is: CMEV.4e/CMEV.4eHT. I cant access the unit as its been boarded into the ceiling of an airing cupboard. The installation guide does not mention needing to clean filters or even how to access them. I think I read it was a self maintained system. I wonder why this noise has suddenly appeared after a year of relative quietness. It doesn't make the extra loud noise when the kitchen light is turned on and I believe the kitchen is also hooked into the same system. What do you think the problem is? Would it be possible to repair this myself, any troubleshooting tips or should I hire someone to take a look?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like it's blocked with dust on the fan. Needs removing and a good cleaning. If not I may need replacing.

This unit (or any unit of this type) should not be boxed in as there are serviceable parts on the case. The fan motor assembly needs to be removed from the main carcass and inspected/serviced and possibly replaced. Please use a competent electrician for this work.

Sounds like you need an electrician/ventilation engineer to carry out some fault finding and repairs for you, ultimately you may require a replacement or possibly even a simple fix, there’s no way to diagnose a problem from such a limited description. It does seem inappropriate to completely box in anything electromechanical that obviously needs occasional maintenance.
