Will I ever need to re-paint coloured MDF?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

Hi, if I buy coloured MDF will I then have to paint it in a few years time or will it wear well? We are building some shelves in our new wardrobes and I wanted to avoid using non-coloured MDF and then painting it as there will be quite a few shelves, and also I don't want to end up having to re-paint over time. Also is MDF the best product to use when building shelves or should I consider something else? Many thanks

coloured MDF will fade over time especially if getting sunlight. MDF in my opinion is the best material as it is workable, very hard and very smooth.

Furniture board is the best option for shelves in wardrobes. Variable sizes in width and thickness off the shelf, choice of colours maintenance free and harder wearing than coloured MDF.

If you use a quality product such as Valchromat coloured MDF it will look good for years to come without the need to repaint. If you are using MDF for shelving it needs to be well-supported as MDF boards have a tendency to sag over time as they take on moisture through airborne humidity. The manufacturer's website will recommend how often supports should be added dependent on the thickness of the board used

I would not recommend mdf for a book case due to fading and sagging unless you make short narrow shelves and seal the mdf and not paint. I would advise ply maybe a little more expensive but well worth the cost and if possible have the shelves powder coated But if spraying or brush painting the adherence is far better on ply than on mdf, minimum thickness of ply wood 18mm Many thanks
