Lime in scratch coat?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.34 PM
A builder done a scratch coat on my garden wall, and the renderer is coming to do the finish. The builder didn't put lime in the scratch coat. The renderer does not know this yet, but he has told me to get some lime so he can do the second coat. Does the scratch coat need lime in it?

Adding lime to the mix is just an option having it or not having it is neither right or wrong.
I personally don’t use lime for my render mixes I just use 2 parts soft sand to 2 parts plastering sand and 1 part cement with a little added plasticiser, but some people do.
I believe it makes the mix a bit more workable and allows a bit more movement then cement would, on an a really old building with lime based mortars used for bricklaying, you want to use lime based render as it allows moisture to past through and not get trapped in between but on modern new buildings with cement mortars it’s completely down to different in option.

You dont put lime in a scratch coat as you dont want sucktion in ure scratch coat .deppending on the finish i often use lime in the top coats (finish coats) eg peppel dashing ,stone tends to stick to a render mix with lime better stopping stones falling off the wall when dry or when rain hits the wall .

I’d confirm who’s going to take responsibility if it fails. I’d personally not take on a job tht someone else had scratch coated.
Lime is worth adding to the top coat for sure. Scratch coat lime not vital.
