How thick should render coats be?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.34 PM
I had a builder do a scratch coat on the garden wall. The scratch coat is thin and he informed me the final coat will be thicker. Just wanted to check if this is right because i've been reading the scratch coat needs to be the thickess. Also, do you need lime in the mix for scratch coat on the external garden wall? Thanks in advance for any help.

What he’s done is right, but honestly there no right or wrong answer here everybody got a slightly different option there is no set british standard as far as I’m aware besides two coats the first consisting of a scratch coat.
Both layers of render can’t be too thick or thinner, no thinner then 5mm no thick then 10-15mm.
As long as it’s flat, smooth and doesn’t crack does it matter the technique used the end results are all basically the same give or take.

I prefer my scratch coat to be 8-10 mm with a waterproofer , only having some lime in the top coat around 10-12 mm each successive coat should not be stronger than the previous coat . If you’re rendering a timber construction it’s best to use a hair, chalk and lime mix which will breath and not hold the moisture unlike cement and sand based mixes which can eventually cause the timber to rot. There’s a lot can be said about rendering this is just my 40 years experience
