Damp Proofing

Rising Damp - semi-detached house built on slate

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

I am considering buying a house which is built on slate with traditional timber joists under the floors. There is a damp problem coming up the walls adjoining the semi-detached house next door. I am informed the neighbour has replaced their floors with concrete. What is the best solution to this and how much would it cost to replace the floor and install damp proofing. I know I will also have to budget for replastering and reflooring etc but it's the cost of the under-floor and damp proofing I can't seem to get an estimate for. Ball park figures/worst case scenario is fine - I literally have no idea! Thank you!

Hi, It is very difficult to give an idea of costs without seeing the property and knowing much more details. One thing i can recommend though. If your neighbour has carried out works that have affected your property then you you may be able to claim damages and have them pay for any required repairs. If they have put in a concrete floor and breached the damp proof course in the party wall then they might have to pay to put the situation right. Speak to a party wall surveyor who can advise you.
