water ingress under bay sandstone cills
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.34 PM
I have water ingress under two sides of the front bay window when it rains. The cills are sandstone. New windows from Jan 2020, they have been checked as has the gutter no problems there but I can't work out why the water comes in so quickly when it rains. The internal wall under the bays is damp after rain, and there is a line of damp about an inch wide directly under the windows on the inside. any advice would be really appreciated thank you

It sounds like there is no drip on your window cills. That should throw any water off that
Runs under the cill. It’s a grove cut under the window cill

1) Has it been fitted with dpc
2) has it been fully pointed
3) is there a cavity?
4) does the cill have a drip
Sandstone is very pourous I agree but applying a sealant will only draw the damp back into the building and damage stone face.check all the above mabe fix a lead flashing under the cill

It sounds like there could be an exposed joint or two that are vulnerable to the weather. Repointing the joints on the sill will help provent this, but with out a proper inspection this is Just an assumption

If solid brickwork Or stonework then unbreathable materials are most likely being used
