Paper/card corner protectors in the corners of a painted room

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

I want to repaint in my new flat. I've noticed there are thick paper or card corner protectors in the corners on the rooms that are lifting a bit in places. The card/paper extends about an inch from the corner on to each wall and runs from the ceiling to the skirting. What are they and why are they there? Should I remove them or go over where they are lifting with decorators caulk? Many thanks for any responses.

sounds like someone has papered round the corners instead of cutting and rehanging the next plumb length, common thing in amature decorating, you need to strip and fill to make a true corner.

It sounds to me as if the walls are plasterboard with tape over the joints and corners if so they should be re-stuck and filled over and rubbed down smooth prior to decorating You can probably confirm this by lifting the edge and viewing underneath to see the pladterboard

Hi if it's a good corner you can come around with the paper. If not then cut the corner but make sure when you cut the corner make sure you cut about 1/4 inch away from your pencil line.so when you put your next piece up you won't see the corner.make sure you plumb that pie wall so your paper straight. I prefer to use a spirit level myself.

This paper is actually part of the taped/jointing before plastering The paper is used to limit cracking, try and keep it in place. I’d try and use filler and then sand before painting
