Bricklaying & Repointing

Should bricks need to be 'trimmed' to fit after a lintel has been installed

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

Recently had some sort of metal lintel fitted due to replacement kitchen window. Work not satisfactory as expanding foam was used for on course of mortar, bricks immediately above window frame are tipping forward at an angle, and cracks in mortar also visible. Firm have agreed work needs re doing - but are telling us they can "trim" the back of the brick off to make then fit the lintel. Does does sound right?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I have no clue why they would use expanding foam for a course of mortar at all, never heard of this method ever and should never be a method.baffled!! ..... if the are replacing the bricks on a single lintel the bricks should fit on the metal lintel, but if they don’t then can cut the bricks down to fit but the cuts should not be on the outside of the lintel they should always be be shown if it’s a finished wall as plumb and flush with rest of the bricks. Olson with mortar (not expanding foam)

If the window sits flush with the brick course theres no need to cut anything... use a tape 👌

From your message. 1/ Expanding foam used on course of mortar bricks ?. 2/ Frame tipping forward ?. 3/ cracks in mortar ?. 4/ trim back ?. Always hard to judge without seeing, but from your description I would suggest take down And rebuild, or get another builder to look at it and advise. Hope this helps.

My answer is no they shouldn’t be trimmed more like if your brick or block work isn’t plum you have tried to equal the bearing on both And they won’t fit on ,
