Oven permanently connected to power supply

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

I'm renting a property and have just had the electrical sockets moved from above the hob (yes I know!) to the wall at the side. Have just noticed that the oven stays on even if the power switch for it at the wall is turned off. Have had numerous problems with the work done in the kitchen but this is now making me question if this is safe. We have requested the job ticket from the estate agent to prove the qork was done by someone certified but they are taking their time over it and I need to know the house is safe. Any advice appreciated! Edit: No idea how to reply on here?! In reply to elec-craft - no the switch on the wall does nothing, the oven itself just stays on whether the switch on the wall is on or off.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, this seems to be a problem best solved by an electrician visiting in person to remove the oven and trace the source of power and whilst they're at it performing a condition report for peace of mind on the property.

The oven is probably on the kitchen ring. Look in an adjacent cupboard for a plug and socket. Whilst it’s not ideal for loading the ring it’s not unsafe particularly. That is of course assuming kitchen does have a ring.

Is the oven plugged into the kitchen circuit?

When you say the oven stays on, do you mean the red neon light on the switch stays on? It is probably because the switch has been wired incorrectly so that the feed and switched lives ate reversed making you think it is permanently ON when the neon is not switched. You can easily verify this by seeing whether the oven still works with the switch off. Edit: It seems the switch has been by-passed by putting the wires into the same terminals.
