Hairline cracks in new front of house re-poitning

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

Hi, I've had the front of my house re-pointed and almost immediately, the cement has hairline cracks all over it. I spoke to the builder and he's assured me it was due to the recent heat whilst applying and these are okay. I was looking for some advice, and to make sure that the cracks won't lead to anything serious like it taking on water and popping over a short period, like my father has suggested. Can anybody shed any light on this? Apologies, pointing spelt wrong in title and no option to edit. Thanks David

With the best of intentions you could probably find one or two in anyone’s work, however there shouldn’t be too many as this could potentially shorten the life of the pointing. It sounds like your contractor may not have used ‘plasticiser’ in his mortar mix. Plasticiser prevents the mortar shrinking whilst it is drying to stop crazing/ cracking or the mortar.

All brick work that has to be repointed should be wet down before repointing as it stops the sand and cement mix drying out to quick . Also if the mix is to strong this can also cause hair line cracks

Wall should have been supported above the crazing . Bricks removed and relaid to even up the courses of bricks especially above lintels , whilst Using a plasticiser In the mix. Existing brick work is best soaked for a few minutes with hose or watering can before repointing/ relaying .

Has the old mortar been grounded out ? Have they used a 4:1 mix of mortar ? Did they damp the brickwork down as they pointed up ? The placsterciser just helps it more workable hope this helps 👍
