How do I stop white paint yellowing after putting over varnished wood?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

Hi, hoping for a little guidance. We have started to renovate our staircase and have painted over the wood paneling under the stairs with a combined primer and undercoat. The wood paneling was varnished and I gave this a sanding down before I started painting. Sadly, after now four coats of paint, we are getting a yellowing effect, I assume from the varnish. In another post, someone suggested a stain block paint - I have found Zinsser cover stain primer which I hope will work. My question is, do I first have to remove the paint I have already put on?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like water based primer has been used over the varnish use a oiled based undercoat and oil based gloss over varnish after a good sand down

You need too cover it with a oil based product ,like a white undercoat , once dry it should hold back the staining and be ready for a finished coat !

Give it a light key then straight on with zinsser cover stain or zinsser bin. This will block any tannins from coming through. I'd advise two coats. Then once dry go over with a satin/gloss/ eggshell of your choice. I personally only use water based products. With the help of zinsser to prime you can't go wrong

Hi in this case, I would use a varnish remover after, wash down with sugar soap paint with an undercoat and then finish with a good quality one coat paint making sure you let each coat dry.

Absolutely not. You need to apply 2 coats of red zinzer stain block, 1 coat of undercoat and 1 coat of top coat. Unfortunately very often the undercoat/primer does not grip well enough on the varnish as well as not cover well. It needs all four coats or it will grin through. Sometimes it is cheaper to get a Professional decorator to do the job. Kind regards
