Safe to powerflush my old radiatiors?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.14 PM

I have been told that I have sludge blocking the return pipe from boiler to the cylinder and recommended a power flush for £430. I was also told that a vacuum option is available but may or may not work for £150. My concern is that our pipes are old and may break or start leaking if exposed to strong chemicals - is this safe? Our house requires a 22m pipe but ours has a 15mm pipe instead which may be part of the problem. We have a 4 bedroom house with roughly 15 radiators although two are small. Is the price and procedure reasonable?

price is about right, any form of chemical/power flushing can be prone to revealing weakness in pipework leading to leaks,if you are rely worried just have section of pipework replaced.

If you hare having circulation issues a power-flush really is the best option. Harsh chemicals needn't be used initially. If the pipes are that old it may be best to prepare for some repairs. Obviously once its done, make sure a good magnetic filter is fitted.

Good price and good advice .have done flushing in the past and the extra pressure can cause leaks especially on the valves on the rads and also the rads themselves this normally happens if the rads are very old ie 30 years plus .hope this helps keith Hutton heating

Seems rather cheap for a powerflush I would be careful. 15mm pipework , one pipe system maybe ?either way powerflushing a 1 pipe system or 2 is difficult working with only 15mm pipework. I would have it all repiped to 22mm and 2 pipe system. Don't entertain the vacuum method or have someone use a foot pump to try to force it out !!
