Render retaining wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.13 PM

I had a retaining wall built in blocks 2 weeks go in order to render it. After 1 days of rain, there is penetrating damp through the wall. 1. What is the best way to stop the penetrating damp? 2. Is it safe to render over the damp region, or render will fall off or discolor? Unfortunately it is quite hard to re-dig the back of the wall again as it is the public footpath and the council will charge an absolute fortune. Could you please advise me what is the best wall the tank the wall from the visible side so we could K-rend it once and for all? Thank you Sam

Hi Your concrete block retaining wall will be open to the elements if you do not get it capped on the top and rendered on the sides once you have done this i would recommend painting it once the render has completely set. This would then seal it ,if your it having it k rendered this would also seal it. The wall may always be be damp underground during rainy days if the retaining section was not built in engineering bricks below ground level. would of also recommended weep holes to be inserted Whilst wall is being built to release water if ground differences are greater on one side this will enable water to escape rather than sit behind the wall. Would also recommend placing stones behind wall under the ground that is retained in order to allow drainage off the water and ease off access to the weep holes this would also help in preventing your wall from getting damp. Would recommend letting the damp section dry out first before you render it. choose a sunny day, should be fine Hope this helps kind regards Louis Nam construction ltd

The Rendering probably needs to dry , Before you can plaster over it again , Make sure surfaces are dry and a nice dry day .

Concrete bricks are very porous and if the inside of the wall has not been tanked (waterproof membrane application) this problem won't go away as everytime it rains the moisture in the soil will look for a way out and the brick will act like a sponge The only answer is to sort out the wall and make it so moisture cannot creep through the concrete blocks.only then can you paint or render it
