Pebble Dash Removal & Brickwork Restoration - Edwardian House

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.13 PM

I would like to get my pebble dash removed (gently) from the front of my house and then the bricks underneath restored, cleaned and repointed. All builders I’ve contacted seem to want to just hack it off and re-render instead of restoring what’s beneath. I’m really struggling to find anyone in the South West who is willing to carry out this job. Can anyone help with advice or recommendations please? My house is an Edwardian terrace. Thank you! I believe the bricks are in reasonable condition and that the pebble dash was not put on to cover bad bricks. I’ve uncovered a reasonable size patch by the front door and the bricks look in good condition. Plus at least 75% of the houses in the street are brick so I have no reason to believe that mine would be any worse than the other 75%... I want to at least try and salvage what might be under the pebble dash rather than just hack it off indiscriminately which is what I feel most builders want to do. I’m guessing it’s a time/cost thing. They just want to hack it off as quickly as possible without much care and then cover it up with new render? Sigh...

your biggest issue here is the condition of the bricks under the pebble dash & how well the pebble dash is adhered to the brick if is has been pebble dashed because the brickwork is bad then you will cause a lot of damage on removal. if it is well adhered to the bricks it will take a bit of force to remove it this will cause damage to the bricks below, I am presuming it is a solid brick building , in which case it will be built with lime mortar a softer building material than cement , while l the face bricks can be replaced re-bedded in N.H.L. the header bricks cannot be replaced. there are a lot of different things that can happen with this type of building and the materials used to render it it would be built with lime mortar which would allow the building to breathe, as it has been rendered in cement this will stop it breathing trapping any water ingress behind the render if this has happened it may blo the render. brickwork in places to escape or create dampness internally, they may have keyed the wall to get the render to attach to the brickwork causing damage to the bricks, yes you can try to remove it gently but it would be time consuming and expensive Personally did a grade two listed building where we removed the render successfully on the bottom section and the brickwork was fine only requiring re pointing, the top section was very securely attached causing major damage to the brickwork & this had to be re rendered in N.H.L. render this was pointed out to the customer at the time and the accepted the consequences of removing the top render. its basically a game of chance you just need someone who cares about your building rather than someone who just sees it as a job good luck Alex
