Possible to replace or extend cut down newel post?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.13 PM

Our newel post is cut down and the bannister removed so the stairs are open on one side. I'd like to reinstate a bannister (family member is facing a long recovery from a broken leg, so for safety reasons) Could the old post be extended or replaced to facilitate this? And how big a job is it? I have posted it as a job but had not interest, so wondered if I was asking the wrong thing. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yeh it can be done, it would need a big dowl joint (a broom handle) plus strong glue and then a new hand rail with spindles

Good morning I hope your week has gone well and you have enjoyed yourself. You can buy an half Newel, you will then need to drill the old bottom Newel to slot the new one in. Many Thanks. Neil Woodhams. Many

You can now buy a proprietary bracket to extend the newel post which is a lot easier method of installation as using a dowel or pinned newel requires the hole in the existing newel to be dead upright

It is possible to replace but it would depend how much has been cut down from the original newel post as to whether there is stump or ground level. The rest of the rail is straight forward from there
