Plastering & Rendering

Replaster and skim the ground level reception room to straighten wall and beading

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.13 PM

My plasterer has sand and cemented my front reception room and skimmed it. No issues with skimming. I noticed there is a hump on the far left wall next to the bay window and noticed the beading curves or bends from top to bottom, which curves the wall. So from the top of wall It it slants left and doesn’t look straight or flush. They are happy to rectify the works by putting a new beading (stop bead) but they would apply thistle bonding it on the column wall next to the bay window and wall under the bay window as it’s newly skimmed after it’s dried out, they said they would add more bonding to level the walls the column wall next to bay window and the wall below the bay window and level it to bay window frame then Reskim. They say they need to add at least 12 mill on to the left column wall and under the bay window in order to straighten it out to get the beading sitting flush onto the wall and straighten out. There is already about 10 mm of sand and cement render under the skim already. I have been told bonding and hard wall is no good on ground level at least 1 meter from ground level as it attracts moisture and could lead to damp problems in the future which was the case with the previous old plaster Which was blown by water penetrating from the front bay window. In fact the damp was in the same spot they wish to hardwall/ bond however since the sand and cement Applied to the walls I have seen no evidence of damp. What is the best way of fixing this problem please ?

I think your plasterer is spot on with his judgement of the issue. Should not affect bonding by damp as he has already applied a 10mm coat of render first and skimmed, so bonding and re skim is the way i would go.

Hi, there is nothing wrong with using hardwall or bonding. Your problem would occur if damp was coming in. Make sure your walls are isolated from damp and you won't have any problems. If your damp Is not controlled you will always have problems, cure the damp and you can use what ever you prefer.
