Intermittent smell from behind toilet

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.12 PM

Hello, So this has been doing my head in since we moved into our house around a year ago. Every now and again I’m getting a musty smell in the bathroom, primarily noticed if you’re sat on the toilet or knelt beside it. I’ve done a few things to address it as we don’t have a ventilation fan. - open the window wide after having a bath - bleached and mildew sprayed all the sinks, toilet and bath sides - put limescale remover down the toilet, and a block cleaner in the back - bleach the toilet regularly After all of this, the small is still there every now and again. The waste pipe of the toilet goes left through a little wooden box cover which we store toiletries on. I’ve taken photos through the side I can see the pipe from and it all looks dry, just very dusty. I’ve even put a small plastic pot under the bits of the pipe I can reach to check it isn’t leaking... problem is I can only get so far because of its position, and I would need to take the top off the wooden cover to see the pipe as it leaves the house. So I am at a loss about the smell now. It definitely seems to resonate from the toilet area, but again i can’t be certain anymore. My worry is water leaking from toilet under floorboard, but that makes me thing the smell should be persistent, not intermittent. I’m not DIY savey so can’t actually inspect certain areas, but any other ideas???

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would hazard a guess that the waste pipe from the toilet goes into a toilet adapter or multiquik connection but if the mutiquik goes straight into a joint on the soil pipe this causes an air gap therefore the intermittent smell

Smells can be caused by so many different things, such as soil stack not ventilated Properly. As the smell is around the toilet area then you might have a leak. Even if the stack isn’t leaking water doesn’t mean it isn’t leaking air. There is a air test you can do to check is your stack is leaking but would advise to get a plumber to do it.

Just take the cistern lid off and make sure that the full valve isn't causing water to splash through the fixing holes, very often the rear of the cistern is black with mold although I've never known it smell all that bad, worth a look.
