Kitchen Fitting

My kitchen fitter messed up my plumbing and left the job awfully done

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi experienced builders. I recently had the most horrifying experience with a builder whom I hired to doors refurb, new worktop in my kitchen and a new larder unit. We did the skip of old doors and worktop ourselves, which he was very upset when we took the work off the original quote. First day, he came in, disconnected the sink (as the sink needed to be lowered) and that damaged my drainage system connected the sink, the dishwasher and the washing machine. Then said he forgot some of the doors and left with job. The next day he came back with the granite worktop I ordered, turned out to be marble! The whole piece cracked to parts before getting in the flat. As we have planned a holiday the next day, he carried some pieces of the stone to put on as temporary working surface for my flatmate to use during I'm away. And the end of the day, he called furiously with my complaint and refused to do the worktop anymore, said he will deduct the money for me to find someone else... Long story short, now most of the doors were fitted but in awfully bad condition, nothing is straight with one door missing. He also broke my drawers when replacing the doors and just left the surface loose. My dishwasher is flooded and could not be open properly because the door was cut into wrong size. I've paid £1200 deposit and now probably have to hired someone to take the cracked marble away and fix the pipes. I wonder is there some sort of compensation I can claim for this?? Can I deduct the fixing cost from the remaining fee that I still owe him? Now I'm sitting in my fallen apart kitchen longing for some help.. Please advice 😓

do not pay him any more money, take photos of the poor work and mess he has left you,get quotes from other contractors to sort it out, tell him you intend to take him to court for damages.

Hi, get in touch with him to see if he has a liability insurance or some sort of it. I am insured in case I damage something, even client property and furniture. About cutting off some job because you did yourself, you should had told him before to do it, once a quote is agree we expect to be paid for it. He is probably upset for it but this does note mean that he had to carry out the job wrongly. Get in touch with him and try to sort it out in a polite way, if not get a letter prepared from your lawyer to sent it over to him.

I agree with no further payment being made contact the local building inspector for your postcode and explain the problem that's if you can find one interested also your local trading officer and explain the situation they can be very intimidating to traders if they get on the wrong side of the officer he may be able to help get your money back.

I wouldn't pay another penny. Clear the materials bill minus the worktop and take lots of pics of damage... Use some of the money you would of gave, to get a legal letter written to him.
