Cold on mixer tap won’t work after hot has been on.
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM
Hi all, I recently had an extension built with a new bathroom. The bath mixer tap is faulty and when I got the builder back to have a look at it, the cold was now working! I’ve since realised that the cold will work at first but if you run the hot for more than a minute it then won’t go back to cold. Only hot water will come out. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? The mixer on the shower and sink work perfectly so I assume an install error ?

It will be a fault with the thermostatic valve in the taps themselves

What type of tap is it ? A thermostatic bath shower mixer, an ordinary BSM, or simply a bath filler. 1 or 2 hole, 1 or 2 handles or knobs ? What type of valves ? Washered type or ceramic disc ?
If it is washered type with no thermostat then the cold valve will be jammed inside & unable to open properly. When it gets hot the brass expands so closes the valve, similar to a thermostat. It is more usual to have this problem when a hot tap jams. It is usually because of over tightening.
If it is a thermostatic mixer then I would suggest the H&C connections may be the wrong way round, however if this is a thermo BSM & the shower bit still works ok then there is most likely an issue with the diverter valve.
At the end of the day it depends upon the design itself as to what the problem might be & without knowing that I can only suggest as above. Hope this helps.
