New Build

Installation of chipboard flooring

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi, Can anyone advise please if it is usual to add perimeter noggings to attach the floor panels to when installing chipboard floors in a new build house? Thanks ps my cabershield flooring has not been installed correctly, i.e no expansion gap on most walls and very few screws. As a result it has cupped and buckled allover, it was a winter build. My builder is looking to sand and screw to get it level again and cut out the buckled parts. He says that now it has moved it won't move again. Should I insist on him replacing all the floors? thanks Mark, that's a very helpful sense check.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, It’s not usual practice to install perimeter noggins assuming your joists are spaced at 400mm centres and your using 22mm or 18mm flooring, but if you were spacing joists at 600 centres (which I wouldn’t recommend) then you would definitely want to use 22mm flooring and add all the extra support that’s possible as it can only help to strengthen the structure. I would definitely have the floor relaid as it sounds like a substantial amount of water has penetrated the boards which will compromise the strength of the floor, at the end of the day it sounds like a complete disaster from the start (laying it tight, not enough fixings etc) I would just ask for it to be taken up and ensure a competent tradesman re lays the new floor (after everything is dry). Hope this helps
