Garden renovation:Can I replace fences and gate before other hard landscaping?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

For a garden renovation project, can I start from replacing all the fence and gate first and do other hard landscaping later? Will the new fence and gate get in the way of doing the patio later? If we rotavate the garden for levelling later, will that affect the new fence?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's really best to get it all done in the one go, especially for gates and fences as removing them for better site access may make the landscapers life 10 times easier and lead to a cheaper quote as they can work faster getting in materials.

Not recommend personally would do the fence and gate last. As if you are lansscaping you might damage the gate and fence . Think of the aesthetics of the final job. Putting the fence in first. Then landscaping. You might ruin the look

Realistically when landscaping a garden you should put the fence up first as this sets the levels and gives you a guide on what grade the garden is. When you put up a fence you have to go with the natural levels.

Putting the fences up would give good levels within the garden and also allow your patio to go tight to the new fencing as oppose to trying to dig new post holes next to a newly laid patio. Would suggest gate after landscaping works though, to allow easier access.

Yes you can put the fencing up first People do it all the time. Sometimes security is an issue so it has to be there. Just bear In mind If you need an excavator in or other equipment to leave a section for access.

First of all I would suggest to plan your access as you may need machines that are wider than the average gate so would suggest if was to do job I would do fencing around property but leave a bay out to allow good access that way if you do decide to do it in stages you will have the access but usually on bigger jobs it would be easier to do it all in one

100% make your life easier do the fencing first. That way u won’t need to take up any landscaping work u have already done to put posts in the ground

We would install the fence first, set the level with the ground, sqaure everything up with the house or the required lines for your next project, This helps with the next projects as everything can be positioned plum. Michael 😀

For me it would good to put the fence up first, but depending on access and when you was looking to complete the rest of the project it might be wise to consider how you will get a machine in if needed.

As a general rule it is best practice once the removal is complete to begin your build with fencing. This helps with defining the boundaries you have to work in as well as knowing exactly where to finish your patio. It will also be easier to set yours posts without anything in the way.

We would personally put the fence up first to save digging big post holes after and also it allows you to be able to gauge where everything else is going to go as you have a boundary!

Personally we like to start by doing the boundaries (fencing) so you have a parameter to work to
