Mdf painted without primer
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM
Hi I’ve recently purchased mdf un-primed skirting and put two coats of Dulux satin wood onto it without putting a primer on before painting it , how do I fix this to apply a primer ?? sand all the way back to the mdf or can I put a primer over the top of the existing paint I’ve applied ??? Thanks in advance

The first two coats of satinwood have soaked into the mdf - this has effectively primed the wood for you. Sanding back will not be effective neither will applying a primer coat. The solution would be to apply two further finishing coats of satinwood.

I would say, sand it back with 120-150 sandpaper and apply one more coat of satinwood and see what happened. You might need one more but see the outcome of the third coat first.

For best results, I would give it a good rub down not a light rub down. You do not have to go all the way back to the wood. Then give it 2 coats of primer undercoat which is all in one. Then give a coat or two of your top coat

I would sand back to a smooth surface, clean down then apply Zinnister 123 primer sealer, let dry then apply 2 coats of water based undercoat, then finish with a oil based Satin finish..

Well you dont want to sand down and take it back to MDF as its carcinogenic so just put another satinwood on after a light rubdown

Because MDF has a very porous surface the paint you have applied will soak in so you won't be able to remove much if any.Give it a light sanding so you give it a key and then apply a good quality primer which will be sufficient for the top coat.Best regards Manngo Decorators

U would personally give it a light rub down followed by another 2 coats of satin as the one coat paints tend to discolour quickly.
