Can you use wood hardener and filler on a small portion of joist?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM
I have a joist where one end could do with replacing, but it is directly over the boiler in the cellar, and pipes are running along this joist, so too close to have a job without massive hassle. I have removed about 1 by 2 inches of rotted wood (and depth 1/2 inch) and the rest is okay. Can I get away with wood hardener and filler, or is this not normally done for joists? Other possibility is whether to put another joist alongside. I really don't fancy having to get the boiler moved. Thank you for any thoughts and advice.

If your repairing 1/2” on the depth of a 6” joist It would be fine as long as it’s not around the wall plate as could potentially make the floor sag.
If you have the room to put in another joist next to the existing that would definitely be the way to go hope this helps

No you cant use fillers, as joists are structural members. You can double up joists either side of structural degraded joist to act as trimmer joist and cut away the part of the damaged joist, but you should consider what was the source of the damage in the first instance and carryout remediation work to mitigate any further damage
