Fire doors difficult to close last three / four inches

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi, Got some 30kg 30 min fire safe doors and fitted with two grade 11 ball hinges. Sizing is good, no issues there, just hinges seem to not enjoy the last three / four inches and door really needs shoved for close. Any ideas what the causes could be? Been on a couple of doors but some affected more than others (I've fitted 8). Kind regards, John

the doors are binding then ,the hinges mite be sunk in to much ,the door is touching the frame on the hinge side , you mite have the screws a bit proud of the counter sink on the hinges ,door touching the rebate on the frame [too close]

Sounds like the door is hinge bound, meaning it's hitting the door check (door stop) before it's closed, either remove and refit check or move hinge out a fraction

Fire doors require a heavy door stop, it sounds to me like the back face of the hinge side is binding on the stop, to check make sure you can get a thick piece of cardboard between the door and the stop at all points around the hinge side of the door... Also check for creaks.. And rubbing noises and wear on the door hinge edge. Fire door can require a door closer if your doors have them make sure your not confusing this situation with the 'latch close' stage of the door closer shutting the door

From description I would say the doors are binding. Basically you/fitter has sunk the hinges to deep. Solution is to pack out hinges with packers, After packing out hinges test the door, you might find because you have altered hinges the door will be hitting the frame now, so door will need planing and a Leading edge doing again. Don't use cardboard for packing, thats what cowboys do @Aecia interior ltd. Hope this helps 👍
