Wetroom floor tiles dipping and grout is orange after one use

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hello all, First, thank you for taking the time to read this question. Basically, we had a wet room fitted upstairs recently with porcelain tiles and the tradesman created a dip for the water to flow. Unfortunately, On the dip the grout appears to have discoloured and started to crack after a single day of use. However, we didn't use the new wet room for around 5 days. Does anyone know what sort of things could cause this? I can't be certain if the floor is concrete or wooden underneath Many thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Grout discolouration normally occurs when the adhesive hasn't fully set, the moisture left in the adhesive is being drawn out through the grout which causes it to discolour. Cracking would suggest there's been movement, which again could be down to the adhesive not being set completely. A simple fix would be to rake out the discoloured area and regrout it.

Hi, without knowing what is underneath the floor tiles then it is probably reasonable to assume that you have movement within the floor thus causing cracking. However cracking in grout can occur anywhere where wall and floor tiles are due to shrinkage (contraction) after a bathroom remodel. Best to rake out and replace. Also, flexible grout for wooden floors must be used and buy the best one regardless of the price. If there is an orange tint on the tiles/grout then that suggests it is the remnants of soap/shampoo which usually leave an orange taint if not washed away completely. If the drain off to the floor isn't nigh on perfect then you will get water pooling and discoloured deposits to the tiles and grout from the pooling. I always use a wet room tray such as Jackoboard to ensure a perfect drain off. Best wishes.
