Internal door handles dropped - can I just replace the mechanism?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM
Hi, On our bedroom doors at home we have a couple of handles that have dropped and just refused to open. We removed the handles and managed to get the door open, and have also taken out the inner workings of the whole handle. We thought we could easily get a replacement but it is proving hard to find a like for like that wouldn't look out of place. Would it be acceptable to just buy a whole brand new latch thing and put the old handles back on? I'm no door expert so thought I would come to the people in the know. Thanks.

Hi,
Well done for getting the handles off and door open. First problem solved!
When you say the handle has dropped, you may find the spring to the handle is the problem. Quick fix could be a blast with WD40 or similar, see if it’s a build up grime over time.
If not you may struggle to find replacement parts that fit.
Cost effective would be to replace new latches and handles if needed.
I am always and fan of repair rather than replace, but unless they are an original feature etc. It might be less of a headache to bid them farewell for a new set.
Hope that helps
Good Luck
