Ceiling painting issues

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

I have sanded and used primer and undercoat on my ceiling. When I have come to paint it parts have started flaking and peeling. What could be causing this and what are the best way to stop this from happening/how can I paint my ceiling without it cracking? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

what ever has been painted on there from the start is causing you problems, you have to sand back to basics and then bond with sealer (oil base) then start again. make sure you use a good paint not just any old cheap stuff, crown/dulux i recommend then 2 coats will sort it....hope this helps...

Do you mean you’ve used the primer and undercoat that you would typically use for woodwork and trim? This could be the issue, I’ve seen this happen in such instances. I think it may be to do with “paint tension”. If this is so first off you will need to get the affected off, if you can’t knock it off with a filling knife you’ll have to use something like Barrett line paint panther. When you’re back to plaster use an emulsion thinned as suggested On the tin on the first coat and then proceed as normal.

Scrape back the peeling/flaking areas as much as you can then sand down to smooth off the edges. Once you have done this bond the surface with some PVA Glue (2/1 mix with water. 2 parts water, one part PVA). Once this is dry, you can fill over the areas with PolyCell OneTime Filler. Sand this once dry & repeat the bonding process with PVA again. Your ceiling should then be good to paint.

Prepare and then base with an oil based undercoat, leave overnight and then emulsion.
