Tiling

Has my Contractor /Tiler done a good job?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

Someone that was recommended to me has done my entire flat. Decorated, new kitchen and bathroom and he has employed people to do various bits as he was 'busy' as he kept reminding me. He had full freedom to do it over two months around other work. I gave him no deadline. He's done a lovely job decorating, the flat was old old old and dated so he had a lot to deal with. BUT he was rushing to finish before his holiday and of course is pressing for the final payment before I even saw the finish. So I went along and to me, there are a few really rushed messy bits. I am not sure whether I am being too fussy but I don't know tiling so I can only go by how I see it. When I questioned a few things he said 'well what do you expect me to do now?' or he would say 'I am doing you a favour and have saved you money' which I have no idea what he means, I've paid him what he has billed me! I can't stand it when people say that they are doing me a favour when I am paying them their full whack. He has gone on from day one how busy he is. I told him 'don't accept the job then!'. He has done a good job, mostly it looks great but I will have paid him personally a total of £8500 once I settle the whole bill. and most importantly the plumbing worked perfectly with amazing pressure from the boiler but now since the refit the hot just dribbles out. he is telling that its a new tap etc and I'll never get good pressure from that system but I KEEP telling him it was always perfect before. Since they have got their hands on it, it's not working properly but he won't take ownership. Now a plumber is saying it'll be £500 to fit a pump but it worked before so I don't know what has changed and why I wasn't told. It is tricky because he is a nice guy, he has done a lot but there's grout or paint all over the new kitchen floor, that I'll need to scrape up. Doesn't seem to come up but I am sure he'll come back and do that. lumps of it. I am not sure I can post photos here but wish I could.

Dear Mr. Leepatsy, It is the responsibility of every contractor to complete the project which they have been contractor to do. There are some things you can do in the future to make sure this don’t happens. * Have the contractor issue you with a sign copy of the contact and you keep a copy. * Do progressive payment and make sure that some of contract budget is left on till after completion and inspections. * Do regular inspection if you are not sure what you are looking for ask a friend or family to help. For this project: * The installation mite require low pressure taps are it mite needs full bore isolation valve if it is a gravity feed system. * I try and speak with your contractor again and explain the issue you have.

with hold full payment until you get a report from a qualified plumber, ciphe will provide a list of qualified plumbers in your area able to provide this service,if the system worked well before the works it should work just as well after, find out what his plumber has done ,if indeed he used a plumber,as anyone can call themselves a plumber and work as such with no qualifications, get a full writen report from his plumber explaining the work carried out and materials used ie low or high pressure taps etc.

It's very simple with tiling, if you can see anything that doesn't look right, then it's probably a substandard job. You shouldn't pay the final bill until all the problems are put right. If the builder can't be bothered to do it then, offer to pay a substantially lower amount. Your argument for this is that you will then have to employ someone to put it right.

Legally you need to give your contractor the opportunity to rectify any problems. Water pressure: If it’s only low pressure too the taps were he had done the work, it could be due to incorrect pressure taps . Some taps are specific to low or high pressure. You should not be putting in a pump if you have only changed like for like fittings when it worked correctly before . If isolating valves have been fitted make sure they are fully open .
