Water tank overflow pipe

Anonymous user 10 August 2020 - 4.43 PM

The overflow pipe from the water tank in the loft is gushing water - I ran the hot taps to empty the tank a bit and it stopped. But the ball valve seems to be working - once the tank emptied a bit, I tested it and the water from the valve would not flow unless I pushed the ball down. I suspect the water is coming back up from the outflow pipes - is that possible? What would be the cause? I don't know if it's connected, but the weather is very hot. Thanks!

Hi, this definitely sounds like you have an issue with the ball valve, especially if you have to hold the ball down to allow the water to flow, the only time you would see water coming out of the overflow would be if there is an issue with the valve, the overflow pipe is basically a warning pipe, this is to tel you that there is an issue with the valve and needs immediate attention, And no water can not come back up the overflow pipe as the pipe is normally set at an angle which prevents water coming back up the overflow pipe. I would recommend that you get the valve changed in the CWSC (water tank). A brass - Part 2 float valve would be needed. Hope this helps.

you may have a problem with cylinder venting into tank,or hot water expanding up the cold feed, the ball valve may be letting by,get a qualified plumber to look at it for you.

No i disagree. If they have testd the balk valve. Then it can not be the ball valve. The water coming from the hot water cylinder What happens is this. One feed is taken off the hot water cylinder (at top of cylinder). To feed the house. From the same pipe a feed pipe is fed into a cold tank in the loft. This done because when the bolier is continuously running without stop the temperature of the water gets too high and it expands in to the cold water tank. Therefore The fault lies either with the cylinder stat or motorized valve Or clock.
