Blocks are moving after 18 months, should he come back and rectify

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

About 18 months ago we had a reasonable size block paved drive done, when he was doing it he seemed ok but 18 months on there are gaps appearing of some 6mm and the edging has bowed out, the guy that did it says that he's not paid to maintain it, foolishly as he was highly recommended we didn't ask about a guarantee but it seems most have a minimum of five years but this guy doesn't want to know, also where we park one of our cars it's dipped a bit, thanks for the two replies, the guy that put in the drive doesn’t want to know about it now, he says he’s not paid to maintain it, I think that’s a poor attitude to have, most seem to have a five year guarantee on their work, this guy thinks twelve months is ample

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If edging has moved the blocks will move forward it’s as simple as that thus causing the gaps

By rights he should have the right to come back and put his mistake right or take him to trade and standards to resolve this issue

The edging should be laid first in a wet sand/cement mix first then allowing it to go off, if it's sinking he probably hasn't used a deep enough sub base, it needs around 200mm or 8inches of sub base and a whacker plate to compact it so the blocks have a solid base

Hi,it sounds to me like the sub base may not be up to the job because after a year / 18 months it shouldn’t be dipping ,one way to check would be to remove a few blocks and look to see if you have the amount of hardcore( mot stone ) required ( between 150 - 200mm ) and if it’s not what was stated it’s bad workmanship ,also the edgings shouldn’t be moving if they were laid on the correct mix and haunched properly ,everything has a life span but this particular drive is in my opinion suffering from bad workmanship or just lack of knowledge ,regarding the guarantee unfortunately without it in writing you probably won’t get any kind of help from the tradesman so again investigate the work and if proved sub standard you may be a bit more likely to get a response ..maybe ???

If the drive is dipping in places where car is there is not enough sub base in. This could also happen in other areas too. If the edging has come loose not enough edging restraint ( concrete on outside of blocks) has been used. It will continue to push out and create gaps but could break in other places where not enough restraint has been used
