Old Bath Taps - switching to a mixer

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

We have independent hot and cold bath taps which are centred 7 inches apart. I believe the standard for new taps is now 180mm - which is 3mm larger than the old. is the change in size likely to be a problem when switching them out for a single mixer tap, as we want to upgrade them to install a shower header? If it makes any difference, it is a metal bath. All experience and knowledge appreciated!

Hi, it should be fine as the threads on the mixer tap which connect to the hot and cold supply are not the size of the body of the tap and given you have a metal bath and it’s only 3mm difference simply filing the hole will suffice if any issues were to be encountered. Also if the reason you are changing is to incorporate a shower then there are always other alternatives such as an electric shower or a bar shower etc. Hope this helps

In my experience I've never had a problem swooping them. Without seeing them and measuring I cant guarantee but can't see an issue as there's clearances

Hi. If these original taps are BS1010 imperial then they will likely be about 1/2 inch longer than the new tap tails... which means you may need to make some pipework changes / extensions. You will also need to fit isolation valves to comply with water regs... allegedly. But in my experience it's removing the old taps that is the hardest job. Also, ask someone who knows if your new shower mixer will actually give you what you want... water pressure wise. Good luck, Bob.

There should be enough play in the existing pipes to fit the new tap.
