Box gutter is overflowing under edge of pitched glass roof.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

I have a 20 year old conservatory-style side return extension with a long aluminium box gutter. The gutter is wide (30cm) but very short on the side that goes under the glass. In torrential rain it overflows under the glass frames and into the wall. Last year one company came and put a layer of Acrypol on it but it continued leaking. I have had a few roofers in and they have suggested other coatings. One suggested they could use torch-on felt to create a new gutter. I can't see how these address the problem that the height of the gutter on one side means it just can't cope with the occasional very heavy volume of water. So how can I have a seal created between the short upstand and the glass? Or what other solution is there apart from replacing the glass roof and gutter in a way that accommodates the occasional torrential downfall?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you believe it’s too much volume for the gutter, it makes no difference what’s used to re seal it... the gutter needs too be deeper. However... creating a better fall towards the outlet may help. Acropol is a temporary solution... rubber/edpm or fibreglass/grp or lead... would be better solutions. Form The top of the gutter back on itself to stop the water coming in under the glass

Could you lower the guttering by 50mm and reset the falls into the rainwater pipe to take away the excess flow during a downpour.
