Replacement of large glass units for top floor flat
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.34 PM
Hi, We have a third floor flat with large size glass panels (160x100cm and 120x140cm). Some glass panels have gone misty and need replacing. Can glass units be installed from inside or does it need scaffolding for access? The frame is PVC and probably 15-20 years old. Thank you.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depending if the window is internally beaded or externally. Scaffold would be required of they are external due to health and safety

It depends if beading is inside or outside? But suspect by your question is external beaded?
In such circumstances it would be a two man job. One up a ladder to remove beads, while one inside holding glass in situ with glass suckers. The glass with internally fitted glass suckers can be twisted and brought into the room, rather than taking down a ladder. The reverse is then done to replace it

Have a look to see if Glass beads are On the inside, if so then it’s a 10min job per unit...
If glass beads are outside then it a much bigger job, definitely needs scaffolding to do the job, but there are still tradesmen that will risk their life just so they can price the job without scaffold just to get the Job, in my opinion in not worth risking your life up a ladder of a 3 storey property for a couple of hundred quid

Hi, if installed correctly, replacement sealed units can be fitted from inside the building. You should be able to see a thin line around the plastic trim that holds the windows in! But...you will need the size, and THICKNESS, measured by a professional......good luck!
