Front driveway wall height leading to public pavement

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

I want to extend the wall height of my front garden/driveway wall, which is adjacent to public pavement on a main road, so I would like to know the legal height of the wall for the front of my bungalow. I also want to add 12 inch rail on top of the wall, so I hope that is excluded in the maximum height, your help and advice in this matter will be highly appreciated

Hi It is usually 1m (including railing) but that differs from county to county so best to check with your local authority.

Morning, Under permitted development, assuming that your property is not listed or within a conservation area, the maximum height typically allowed is 1m including railings. Should you wish to go higher than 1m, a householder planning application would typically be required. Kind regards, Antony

It is important that you are able to see pedestrians, especially small children on the footpath as you exit your driveway. In this regard it is not only the height of the front boundary fence or wall but the amount of vision splay from the drivers seat position which is important. Most highways authorities will have requirements and guidelines on their website concerning parking and access and it would be worth familiarising yourself with these before making alterations.
