Electrical

Price increase after price being agreed

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

I have agreed a price for an electrical refub. £3100 The first line of the job description said . I require refub of a small 3 bed electrical system so that the property is in a safe condition so that it can be rented out. The electrician started the work with his apprentice all seemed well. He texted me and said I needed a plaster to re-plaster where the wall had been chased out for second fix, I said I was going to do it but he seemed to want it done by his friend so I agreed to pay his friend. Then straight away he sent me another text saying he would let me know how much he is charging me for bonding material costs?? Is this normal ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Take charge of your job. If you wanted to do the plastering then do it. If you are happy to let his mate do it then he's going to need materials and bonding is part of that. This is a classic example of why it's good to put the job in contract then you both know where you stand.

first of all a proper electrician would told you that he didnt do plastering and that you would need a plasterer to complete the job did you get a proper writen quote for the electrics if you did tell him to get stuffed as you will get your own plasterer because his price for the plasterer will have a bit of extra money for him

Its not really a question of whether it is 'normal' it is more a question of what you agreed to pay for, and what he has included in his quotation. Maybe he is including the labour element in his price to you but adding the cost of the materials. You need to check what he said he would include in the price. If the price you agreed was a fixed price quote for all the refurbishment work then he cannot charge extra for doing the plastering. It would seem obvious that plastering would be required anyway so it does look on the face of it like he is charging for something he shouldn't be.

I always state that making good plaster and decorations are to be done by others at the outset quotation. It apears this has not been made clear from the quotation stage. I agree that you would expect the whole job to include these works if not originally advised that this would not be the case. The electrician needs to be more sppecific whilst providing his quote. Good luck

Without knowing the full details of the situation it is hard to say. What I would say is if the price was agreed for, what sounds like a Re-wire that's what the price should be. Sometimes there are extras or bits that you have missed off the quote. I always find that before I continue the work it is always good to have a chat with the client to discuss the best way forward and agree the extra cost. In terms of the plastering that is tottally up to the client, not the tradesman. Hope this helps

Hi the quote for the electrical work is for the electrical work. When you discussed the job with the electrician he should of explained that chasing walls out was required and that the walls would need bonding/filling plastering etc. The plastering should of been left to you to obtain, he could recommend a plasterer but its your property, obviously to get the plasterer booked in, to speed up the 2nd fix process. As usual its seems bad communications

Yes. He is going to let you know cost of plaster. I assume then you will be billed for labour only for the plasterer. Just get him to clarify.

The price agreed is the price agreed!!! In nearly 40 years of trading I have never asked a customer to pay more money than I have quoted.... happens more and more nowadays where a tradesmen puts a price in to low just to get the job and then finds out he done his maths wrong

When quoting for a job and they is chasing to be done to make it look more professional then obviously you would need a plaster and that would be at your cost and not included in the price. Yes he could recommend a friend and that would be your decision. The price you paid is more then enough for everything to be included too. Next time use my builder and get someone professional.

No normally on a rewire job the chasing and patching ie plastering would be under taken by the electricial contractor. This is normally agreed before works commence and agreed who is under taking the chasing and plastering after ,however the price agreed for the job Is reasonable if even on the low side . Shouldn’t take lot of bonding and finish to complete job .

If he is being the contractor then yes. I would say go and look around for another plaster. Get different prices. Also I would expect the electrician to carry out any work to make good in the price. I would do that in the cost of my work but that’s me.
